Dr Amy Kirke
Fisheries Scientist
January 2025 - current
Amy, the 'Sharky' is a fisheries research scientist at Northern Territory Government in Darwin, Australia. Her expertise is in life history and ecology of elasmobranchs with knowledge and skills acquired through her PhD at Charles Darwin University between 2018-2024. Her PhD entails researching, testing and assessing the age, growth, dispersal and reproduction of four commercially targeted shark species in the Northern Territory. Currently she monitor the Offshore Net and Line Fishery of Northern Territory and continue her passion working on elasmobranchs.
Amy is highly passionate in teaching and has worked at Murdoch University, Perth as a demonstrator in Introduction to Environmental Science and volunteered on a field trip for Tropical Marine Biology unit. She has now taken up supervising roles for post graduate students at Charles Darwin Univeristy in Northern Territory.
Sulav completed his Masters in Environmental Science from Charles Darwin University in 2022. Subsequently he applied for NT Government's Graduate program and was successful in securing 3 months work at NT Fisheries under my supervision. Sulav currently work as Biosecurity Systems Officer with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries with the Northern Territory Government.
Sulav's spent his time in fisheries specializing in spatial analysis, using maps to uncover patterns in fisheries and marine mammal research. He applied Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs) to reveal hidden spatial trends for sustainable management, and assisted scientists with otolith measurements to decipher fish age and growth. His fieldwork involved measuring fish lengths and collecting vital data for reef fisheries. He also explored datasets for relevance, ensuring meaningful insights, while continuously expanding his skills in tools like PowerBI, R Studio, and statistics.
